Indeed, both dialogues and cross-overs between the arts, and interdisciplinary approaches to all these social and aesthetic phenomena prove particularly appropriate and stimulating for the study of the consequences of the diasporic dimension in contemporary life and arts.

It is in this sense that Diasporas in Portuguese, a branch of Ulyssei@s, presents itself as a digital thematic encyclopaedia – a space for disseminating and enhancing knowledge about writers and other artistic creators of the 20th and 21st centuries, whose works shed light on trajectories and issues linked to the various diasporas of portuguese-speaking countries. Although the autobiographical dimension of the diaspora may be relevant, it will not serve here as the sole criterion for inclusion of authors or works. In the same way, the fact that the post-colonial period is given priority does not mean that authors and works prior to this period will not be included, provided that they specifically address diasporic expression and its derivations.

Diasporas in Portuguese proposes to privilege notions and images of origin, diversity and dispersion, rather than of those that point to destination, unity or fixity. Whilst, from a critical perspective, it highlights and articulates movements involving the various Portuguese-speaking spaces, it seeks to transcend the limits of reception and analysis determined either by rigid aesthetic categories or by national borders.

As work in progress, the entries may be updated whenever necessary, respecting the encyclopaedia’s founding problematic and its reflexive nature as a knowledge base.

Contemporary life is indelibly marked by phenomena of migration, exile, deterritorialization, and reterritorialization, all dictated by various factors (political, economic, environmental, family, or professional), which have found in artistic creations a place of testimony, reflection, reinvention, and intervention.
